What's New for the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas?
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is completely redesigned, with a 282-hp engine, better EPA-estimated fuel economy than the 2026 model, a new cabin with screens up to 15 inches, and a seventh airbag.
- Bigger screens. The SE gets a 12.9-inch touchscreen, every other trim gets 15 inches, and a new console dial runs volume and drive modes.
- Shifter on the column. That's what makes room for a larger center console with dual wireless charging rated up to 15W.
- More standard gear. You'll now find a power liftgate, rear sunshades, front and rear Park Distance Control and B-pillar air vents on every trim.
- Seven airbags. There's a new front center airbag, and Travel Assist adds driver-initiated assisted lane changes.
Las Cruces sits where I-25 ends at I-10, so a lot of the driving you'll do here is interstate driving. For those miles, it's the better EPA-estimated mileage and the new assisted lane change that matter most.

Towing didn't change, so if you pull a small trailer to the Southern New Mexico State Fair & Rodeo each fall, the model year won't decide it for you. If your weekends end at Dripping Springs Natural Area, about 26 minutes east of us out Dripping Springs Road, the line you'll want to look at is drivetrain. 4MOTION is available on every trim, and every 2027 Atlas has 6.5 inches of ground clearance.
Engine, Fuel Economy and Towing
The 2027 Atlas has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 282 hp and 258 lb-ft on regular fuel, EPA-estimated at 25 mpg combined with FWD and 23 mpg combined with 4MOTION.
4MOTION models get Active Control, a selector with snow and off-road settings, and it's able to send up to 50% of the torque to the rear axle.
Is there a 2027 Atlas hybrid?
No. Volkswagen says a hybrid version is planned for the midcycle refresh, but it hasn't given a date. If you won't buy anything but a hybrid, you'll be waiting without an end date.
How much can the 2027 Atlas tow?
- SE with Technology and up: 5,000 lb with a braked trailer, and the factory hitch is standard.
- SE: 2,000 lb with a braked trailer and an aftermarket hitch. It's got hitch prep.
- Conditions: the maximum rating needs a third-party trailer brake controller and the factory-installed hitch. Load and options can lower it.
Heading to Elephant Butte Lake State Park, about 1 hour 22 minutes up I-25? Weigh the loaded trailer first, since fuel and gear add pounds the brochure doesn't count. If it's over 2,000 lb, skip the SE.
Third Row, Car Seats and Cargo
The 2027 Atlas seats seven with a 60/40 sliding second-row bench and a 50/50 third row, and it holds 21.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 55.9 behind the second and 95.4 with both folded.
There's 34.1 inches of legroom in the third row. The second-row bench slides 7.7 inches and still tilts forward with a child seat installed, so you don't have to pull a car seat to let someone into the back. If you'd rather have captain's chairs, they're available from the SE with Technology up and drop seating to six.
For a day at White Sands National Park, about 56 minutes east on US-70, there's room behind the third row for a cooler and a couple of sand sleds with all seven seats filled.

Every 2027 Atlas has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.9-inch (SE) or 15-inch touchscreen.
Summer's the test for an interior here. In Las Cruces, average highs climb from 87.1°F in May to 96.2°F in June and stay above 88°F through September, and that's why it matters that ventilated front seats, three-zone climate control and rear sunshades are standard on every trim. You'll get ventilated second-row seats from the SEL R-Line up.

Volkswagen hasn't published which colors go with which trim, so if you've got a combination in mind, ask about incoming units. A dark interior that's sat on a lot in June is worth thinking about twice.

IQ.DRIVE driver assistance is standard on every 2027 Atlas trim, and the 2027 Atlas has seven airbags, including a new front center airbag.

Travel Assist is hands-on, and there's no hands-free mode. On the 54-minute run down I-10 to El Paso International Airport, ACC Stop and Go takes some work out of the drive, but driver assistance features aren't substitutes for attentive driving.

Yes, if you'll use the third row. The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas has 34.1 inches of third-row legroom and up to 95.4 cubic feet of cargo, but there's no hybrid yet.
