Thanks to its location within the Chihuahuan Desert and proximity to the stunning Organ and Robledo Mountain ranges, Las Cruces, NM makes for a wonderful home if you’re one of those outdoorsy types. Whether you seek adventure or just want to relax with some great natural scenery, there’s a wide variety of outdoor activities to enjoy. Here are a few places where you can find them!

1. Practice Your Dirt Biking Skills at Desert Peaks Motocross

Motocross riders of all skill levels will love the tracks and facilities at Desert Peaks, which is located on 7555 El Centro Boulevard. The larger track features everything you can ask for, including large double jumps, sweeping corners, and a rhythm section. The mini track is ideal for beginners and balance bikes. Even if you’re completely new to the sport, expert staff members are available for group or one-on-one lessons.

One of the best things about Desert Peaks is that the track configuration regularly changes to provide new challenges. If you prefer to spectate, the complex regularly hosts exciting racing events.

2. Camping at the Aguirre Spring Recreation Area

Put the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system and spacious cargo hold to good use with a camping trip to the beautiful campgrounds at Aguirre Spring, accessible from 15000 Aguirre Spring Road. Adjacent to the majestic Organ Mountains, this recreation area is full of desert plant life and offers splendid views of the Tularosa Basin. Even the famous dunes of White Sands National Park can be seen from many spots.

There are over 50 camping sites at Aguirre Spring, and they all feature picnic tables and large BBQ pits. Plenty of them are well shaded, as well. If you want to take in some of the sights of the area, the campground has easy access to two popular trails.

3. Fishing at Young Park

You don’t have to take a long trip to the lake to go fishing because Young Park on 850 S. Walnut Street is home to a peaceful pond that’s regularly stocked with fish, such as catfish and trout. You’ll also find ducks and turtles here. Large trees along the pond give ample shade from the sun, so feel free to visit during the summer months. Other facilities include a large playground, picnicking areas with grills, and pavilions.

Several wide walking and biking paths wind through Young Park, making it the perfect place for a morning jog or an evening stroll.
