The 2027 model year is almost here. Along with a full lineup of SUVs, sedans, and hatchbacks, Volkswagen is also introducing two new models and reintroducing our electric microbus to the North American market. The first new vehicle coming our way is the 2027 Atlas. The completely redesigned three-row SUV is now bolder than ever. Atlas now exudes a premium feel both inside and out, thanks to a new front fascia design, upgraded interior materials, redesigned controls, and a host of great convenience, technology, and new driver assistance features. All Atlas levels are equipped with a power liftgate, rear sunshades, an auto-dimming driver's side mirror, hatch lights, and front and rear Park Distance Control as standard equipment. The IQ.DRIVE suite of driver assistance features will receive enhancements, including a predictive Adaptive Cruise Control. Under the hood is an updated 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, now rated at 282 horsepower. Fuel economy and tow ratings have yet to be finalized, but we should expect to see improvements in the former while retaining a maximum tow rating near 5,000 pounds. The new three-row 2027 Atlas will be joined by a new 2027 Atlas Cross Sport. The new two-row model will reach our showrooms slightly after its larger sibling. Details will be announced later this summer or early fall. The ID.Buzz electric bus returns for the 2027 model year, with a new Tourer model following in the footsteps of its camper van forebears. The Tourer model includes a fold-out mattress with a retractable platform, window blinds, and a table and chairs for use outdoors. To make your sleep more comfortable, a new Overnight Mode allows the ID.Buzz to recognize and accommodate passengers overnight. Every 2027 ID.Buzz also gains tactile controls on the steering wheel, enhancements to the infotainment system, and a series of premium connected services available through the In-Vehicle Premium Subscription service. As for the remainder of the 2027 Volkswagen lineup, there will be minor updates. The 2027 Taos will gain a Sport trim, while infotainment systems will get further enhancements across the board. The ID.4 will take a hiatus for 2027, but customers can still shop any remaining 2026 inventory until a new ID.4 is expected to arrive later this decade. You get a glimpse of Spanish architecture while traversing through the mountains into Taos. Heading back, you can take the Lowroad from Taos and Santa Fe to our state’s capital. West of Santa Fe is the Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway. This takes you into the Santa Fe National Forest to the Jemez Pueblo. Along the way, there are some amazing waterfalls and hot springs that bring this mountainous loop drive to life. Keep to the north, and you’ll find another mountain loop known as the Enchanted Circle Drive. Starting in Taos, this loop encircles several alpine peaks while taking you through the history of this state and the land grant given to that area. You will pass through an old mining area that has no longer yielded its treasure. If you like a good rugged road, the Quebrados Backcountry Byway is an experience to drive. It is a 24-mile-long unpaved road that starts in Escondido off Interstate 25 to the north of us. The landscape is worth the trek along this road. This is a great experience that is closer to home. The EPA says drivers will get 28 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, while 4Motion Taos models achieve 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Great Standard Tech Features Standard on the S trim is an 8.0-inch Digital Cockpit gauge cluster display and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while SE and SEL models get Digital Cockpit Pro with a 10.25-inch display. The SE and SEL models also get standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Larger Than You Think The Taos has plenty of interior volume with 28 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats when equipped with FWD and 25 with AWD. With the rear seats folded, AWD models have 60.2 cu.ft. of space, while FWD models have 65.9. The 2026 Tiguan Sitting just above the Taos, and the best-selling Volkswagen in the lineup, is the freshly redesigned Tiguan. Powering The Tiguan Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that delivers 201 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque with FWD, or 221 lb-ft with all-wheel drive. New for 2026, though, is the SEL R-Line Turbo, which takes that turbo engine and turns it up to 10, delivering 258 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. All models get an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission that is as smooth as butter. The EPA says the Tiguan FWD models will get up to 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, while AWD models will achieve 22 city and 30 highway. The hot SEL R-Line Turbo takes off just one mpg from the highway mileage. Fantastic Technology Inside, the Tiguan gets a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, all as standard. The top-line SEL R-Line Turbo comes with a 15-inch system as standard. With the redesign, all models get Speech with A.I. voice assistant, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 15-watt wireless charging pad, and four 45-watt USB-C fast charging ports with two more available as an option. Plenty of Cargo Space Behind the second row of seats, the Tiguan offers 33.8 cubic feet of cargo space, which grows to 69.8 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded. Here Comes The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Models Next in the lineup are the pair of Atlas models: the three-row Atlas and the two-row coupe-like Atlas Cross Sport. Both come standard with front-wheel drive and offer 4Motion all-wheel drive as an option. Pricing and Trim Levels The full-size Volkswagen Atlas starts at $40,785, and the two-row Atlas Cross Sport starts at $39,775. Cargo Space Behind the rear seats of the Atlas Cross Sport, owners will have a rather larger 40.3 cubic feet of cargo space that expands to 77.6 cu.ft, when the seats are folded. This makes it one of the largest in its class, just like the Taos and Tiguan. However, the larger Atlas offers even more, with 20.6 cubes behind the third row that expand to 55.6 when the third row is folded. Folding down all seats gives a massive 96.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity, once again making it one of the largest in its class. The Volkswagen ID.4 Would Like a Word Last, but certainly not least, is the all-electric Volkswagen ID.4, which has received multiple updates and upgrades over the last couple of years, making it one of the more well-rounded EV SUVs on the market. With a starting price of $46,570, the ID.4 is available in a single-motor rear-wheel-drive or dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. Pro and Pro S rear-wheel drive models feature 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque, while dual-motor AWD models (AWD Pro, AWD Pro S, AWD Pro S Plus) get 335 horsepower and around 500 lb-ft of torque. Since 1976, the Volkswagen GTI has been a trendsetter in automotive culture. As the first hot hatch, it’s created multiple generations of competitors that have never been able to quite capture the hearts and minds of car buyers the way the GTI has. 50 Years Young To mark 50 years and 2.5 million cars sold to date, Volkswagen is celebrating its birthday with a series of global events, three unique concepts, and the release of the first-ever electric GTI. A GTI and A 12 Cylinder Engine The concepts are not new to the GTI world, as they debuted in 2007, 2013, and 2014. However, they are a reminder of what the spirit and creativity of the car mean to enthusiasts. The first concept, the GTI W-12, was a car that answered a question no one had. What if Volkswagen stuffed a Bentley 12-cylinder engine behind the front seats of a fifth-generation GTI? What we got was a powerhouse with 650 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque from a 6.0-liter W-12, a dual-clutch transmission, and a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 202 mph. To accomplish this, VW lowered the car by three inches and widened it by six to work properly, then put a rear axle and brakes from a Lamborghini, the engine from a twin-turbo Bentley Continental, a carbon fiber roof, and rear suspension and such from an Audi R8. Before Becoming a Farmer, Jeremy Clarkson Reviewed Cars In the debut episode of series 10, Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson enjoyed a hot drive in the GTI W-12. He said it wasn't a particularly savage car in terms of performance, but it just wouldn’t stop going once you pushed the accelerator. While the car was originally painted Candy White, it has since been repainted Tornado Red. A Seemingly Simple Yet Special Concept The next car VW showed off was the Design Vision GTI concept at the 2013 LA Auto Show. This special model featured a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that produced 503 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, according to Volkswagen. Engineers widened a Mk7 GTI by 2.8 inches, lowered it to squat over the wheels, installed one-off 20-inch wheels with center locks, fitted carbon-ceramic brakes, and added special bodywork with new side air intakes and vents. The interior was inspired by the Audi R8 at the time and stripped for weight savings, with Alcantara and carbon-like appointments throughout the cabin, plus red door pulls instead of handles. Volkswagen ripped the rear seats out and put a massive X-brace in their place to stiffen the chassis. Fantastically Fast With a dual-clutch DSG transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive, VW said this unique GTI could reach 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds and top out at 186 mph. This was quite a bit quicker off the line than the Mk7 GTI at the time, which, according to Car and Driver, required 5.6 seconds to 60, a brisk time even by today’s standards. The Most Unique GTI Ever Volkswagen followed the success of the previous two cars by introducing a very special one-off: a roadster built for Gran Turismo 6. The GTI Roadster offered the same twin-turbo V6 as the Design Vision GTI. The GTI Roadster, though, turns the GTI into a Speedster, with short windows and a windshield, plus scissor doors, a giant rear wing, and all-new bodywork and one-off wheels. The legendary 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is available as an option across all trim levels, and Volkswagen says a hybrid model will arrive in a few years during a mid-cycle refresh. The new, unique stacked LED headlights, along with the lighted bar and VW logo running along the front grille, let everyone know what you’re driving before you even get there. More pronounced fender flares lead the way to different wheel sizes, from 18 to 20 and 21 inches. The high shoulder line of the side profile gives the Atlas a more upright appearance. The taillights feature multiple LEDs connected by a lightbar. New Exterior Colors Volkswagen will offer three new colors for all 2027 Atlas models: Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone. A New, More Premium Interior The premium-ness doesn’t stop with the exterior design. No, the interior incorporates new design elements, such as high-end soft-touch materials, genuine wood on the dashboard, and the ability to choose from up to 30 ambient interior colors. New Colors, Accents, and Features Buyers will be able to choose among three interior color options: pebble grey, a moody black with dark grey, and a brand-new deep wine. Base trim models feature leatherette seating surfaces, while the top two trim levels receive Varenna or Nappa leather seats. Speaking of seats, the driver will appreciate having a 12-way power-adjustable seat with four-way lumbar support as standard. Rear passengers receive a new air vent in the B-pillar for improved ventilation. Better Interior Tech Base trim levels will have a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while all higher trims have a 15-inch screen. The much-loved 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro digital instrument cluster is also standard on all models and configurable to your tastes and needs. The Driver Experience Dial on the center console will control the stereo volume, the new Atmosphere feature, and the different drive modes. For the first time, the Atlas is available with side-by-side Qi2 wireless chargers in the center console for the driver and front passenger. However, seven USB-C ports are still offered throughout the cabin. Owners will get a free one-year subscription to Premium Speech, the new generative A.I. voice assistant from Volkswagen. New Standard Equipment The 2027 Atlas offers new features as standard, including a power liftgate, rear sunshades, auto-dimming driver side mirror, dual hatch lights, and rear park distance control. Base models are upgraded to a 9-speaker sound system, while other models offer a 14-speaker Harmon Kardon premium sound system, standard on the top trim. Even More Safety Than Before One of the greatest innovations of the 2027 Atlas is the inclusion of a center airbag between the driver and front passenger, bringing the total to seven airbags. The standard IQ.DRIVE suite of safety equipment features updated driver-assistance technology, including Travel Assist for semi-autonomous, hands-on driving, and Emergency Assist, which will bring the vehicle to the side of the road and to a complete stop during a medical emergency. The base model now gets Park Distance Control as standard, while the top trim gets a new version of Park Assist Plus. You Choose Between Two and Three Rows Like the previous models, the Atlas will be available as both a three-row SUV and the two-row Atlas Cross Sport. When properly equipped, both models will still be able to tow up to 5,000 lbs.
